“学习英语重要吗？”在当今时代，这个问题也许早已不需要答案。英语作为全球使用范围最广的语言，无论是学业晋升，还是商务贸易，环球旅行，能够熟练掌握英语，都是一项具备竞争力的技能。而对于所有青岛耀中的学生来说，英语不仅是一门学科，也是他们学习、生活和交流主要使用的语言。

在耀中，进入中学阶段，就意味着不再有中外籍教师的合作教学，除中文课程外，学生需要用英语学习所有其他科目，因此英语不止是一门语言课程，也是学习其他课程的媒介和工具，更是提升素养，树立价值观的重要渠道之一。中学低年级的英语语言与文学课，课程不仅要帮助学生夯实英语基础，同时希望培养学生用批判性的思维去理解全球文学作品。当他们学习了足够多的文本，就可以运用自己的聪明才智来创作作品了。

对于英文作为第二语言的学生，英语课程的首要目的是提升听说读写能力，特别是写作能力，因为写作能力可以辅助学生在各个学科的学习。除此之外，单词和拼写等基础的学习也十分重要，学生会学习不同学科的学术单词来辅助其他学科的学习。对于英语基础较为薄弱的同学，英语加强课程会帮助学生快速补齐短板，来满足日常学习中对英语的需求。到了中学高年级，学生输入及输出的语言量更大，他们会学习源自不同时期、不同国家、不同主题的英文作品，也会通过设计自己的旅游网站、听英文播客、阅读英文原版书籍等方式，来不断地提升自己的英文水平，增加英文使用的频率。

然而如果你觉得学好英语就是枯燥地背单词、做练习题、听说读写，那就大错特错了。在耀中，有多种多样的课堂活动和课外实践来精进学生的英语能力。在十二年级知识理论和英语B的联合课程上，学生展开对 “如何评判艺术的成功与否？”话题的激烈辩论。他们集中精力讨论颇为抽象的问题，不仅展示了高超的英语语言技能和词汇水平，更充分体现他们的高阶思维能力。

“英语星期三”是一个非常受欢迎的课外活动。在每周的星期三，学生被鼓励在课堂外、与朋友交流时都尽可能地说英语，而相应的奖励就是为自己所在的队伍积分，并最终获得一份可以与成员共享的美味。“与科技结盟”是耀中的三结盟校训之一，而这一理念也同样深植于英语课堂。老师和同学可以充分利用线上的学习资源，例如IXL.com 和 readtheory.org等学习平台来完成线上练习、测试、水平评估及追踪等功能，还可以利用数据更科学地分析学生的阶段和水平。
