In early Spring, Year 12 students, accompanied by Mr Bourne and Ms Bonkowska, embarked on a life-changing service learning trip to the Philippines. The group spent a week at Kids International Ministries in Manila, marking the school’s fifth visit to this incredible organisation. The trip was a resounding success, offering both students and staff a transformative experience that challenged perspectives, fostered personal growth, and left a lasting impact on all involved.

The week was filled with meaningful opportunities to engage with individuals from around the world who shared a common goal: to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. From the moment the group arrived, it was clear that this trip would be about more than just volunteering—it would be a journey of connection, resilience, and self-discovery.

One of the most profound aspects of the trip was the chance to hear the stories of the young people and adults supported by Kids International Ministries. These stories of overcoming adversity through resilience and faith were deeply moving, providing the group with a fresh perspective on their own lives and inspiring them to consider how they can positively impact the world around them.

The students and staff immersed themselves in a variety of activities, each designed to support the local community. They spent time in areas of extreme poverty, learning basic Tagalog phrases, playing basketball with local children, and clearing land for future building projects. They also delivered food to families in need and painted rooms in a children’s home, brightening the environment for the young residents.

A particularly memorable visit was to the mission’s clinic, which provides vital support for women and childbirth. The group was amazed by the stories shared and touched by the “Wall of Life,” which featured the names and painted footprints of every baby born at the centre.

Another impactful experience was the visit to Tondo, an area devastated by poverty and two significant fires in the past year. Witnessing the resilience of the community in the face of such challenges was both humbling and inspiring, further emphasising the importance of service and solidarity.

Beyond the service work, the trip also offered opportunities for personal growth and adventure. Students and staff pushed themselves out of their comfort zones by leaping off 4-metre and 10-metre diving platforms at their accommodation—a thrilling challenge that left everyone with a sense of achievement. The group also enjoyed moments of relaxation at Darank Falls, reflecting on the beauty of nature and their place in the world.

Cultural immersion was another highlight of the trip. The group sampled local delicacies like the fruit Guyabano and dined at popular Filipino restaurants such as Jollibee and Mang Inasal. Travelling by Jeepney and Trikes added to the excitement, providing a true taste of Filipino life.

By the end of the week, the group was exhausted but fulfilled. The smiles and joy shared by everyone involved, even in the most challenging circumstances, were a testament to the success of the trip. It was an adventure with a purpose—one that not only made a difference in the lives of others but also left a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of the students and staff.

This year’s service learning trip to the Philippines was a powerful reminder of the impact that compassion, teamwork, and a willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone can have. It was an experience that will undoubtedly shape the way our students view the world and their role in making it a better place.

Here’s to many more transformative journeys ahead!
