Last year, Dr. Stephanie Sanders-Smith, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) interviewed teachers and Co-Principals of Yew Chung to learn their teaching experience. After study, Dr. Sanders-Smith named the pedagogy “Yew Chung Approach”. She is working with colleagues at UIUC and Yew Chung to develop this conceptualisation of the Yew Chung Approach.

Dr. Betty Chan, the CEO and Supervisor of Yew Chung and Yew Wah schools, once said, "Learning and practice influence the changing world". Yew Chung educators never stop learning. On April 9th, 2019, Australian scholar Ms. Rebeca Tamas, a scholarship winner of the Australia China Friendship Exchange Association Inc. (ACFEA), visited YCIS QD to conduct in-depth study and exchange with Yew Chung educators on Chinese teaching.

YCIS QD attaches great importance to the real integration of Chinese and Western cultures, so that students can appreciate the inherent nature of culture. The Australian scholar, Ms. Rebeca Tamas, who works in Warners Bay High School, visited YCISQD campus and joined in our Chinese classes. Seeing vigorous classroom games, nursery and rhythmic songs used in Chinese classes, she understands the diversity of Chinese classes in our school and fully experiences and learns Yew Chung unique Chinese teaching concept and mode. Ms. Rebeca Tamas says "I think the biggest thing YCISQD has is the quality teachers. They were using fun activities and games to teach difficult concepts and vocabulary. The activities and games used were communications in a real-world context. The repetition of vocabulary occurred naturally in the songs and games so students were not aware of what they were learning. The level of fluency which I observed here is something I haven’t seen in Australia before. I will use what I have learnt at this school to teach languages at my own high school in Australia."

Ms. Rebeca Tamas’ visit and exchange not only promoted the cultural exchanges between China and Australia, she will also bring the unique Yew Chung Approachto more educational scholars. Yew Chung's unique teaching method has received international attention and recognition, which is the best inspiration for Yew Chung educators.
